Seeking Addiction Treatment Amidst the Pandemic

The COVID-19 pandemic took everyone by surprise. While society is still trying to figure out how to deal with it – the virus is currently a primary focus in the medical industry.

Although taking action is good amidst such uncertain times – this targeted focus can lead to negligence in other sectors. It would help if you stayed safe – but this doesn’t mean that you should neglect your other medical conditions.

Relapses and the virus

The pandemic is scary enough – but there are some added risks to those suffering from substance abuse disorders. In addition to being potentially more at risk of suffering the effects of the virus, there are concerns it can hit the recovering community hard.

Recovering from any addiction is incredibly stressful – even if the best environment. The situation of the quarantine spells disaster for many recovering addicts.

On the one hand – you have the general nature of the quarantine. Limited social exposure and being forced to reduce your outings means many individuals find themselves without support. This crucial support is what facilitates robust mental health.

Additionally, outings are rigid, and many people find the circumstances to be scary and uncomfortable. Economic hardship and fear over the virus also add some extra stress.

Stress alone already creates a toxic environment for someone who is trying to steer clear of their addictions. To make matters worse, the medical industry’s pressure also leaves everyone with a bit of confusion.

Many hospitals in the United States find themselves crowded or understaffed. Some people feel bad bringing their needs to light. Others simply don’t know where to go if their facilities don’t have time.

Due to this, many experts fear that relapses will be on the rise during these times.

What can we do to seek treatment?

Remember, your problems are not insignificant.

It would help if you stuck with your opioid addiction treatment to avoid relapse. Your wellbeing and safety are still just as critical during a crisis.

While it will be difficult for things to be precisely the same – there are some things you can try to help keep up with your treatment.

Keep up with medications and supplements. If you need to take any specific medications – don’t skip out on it. Going outside can be scary in times like this, but you must keep up with your routine. If you use supplements, you may be able to order your products online. You can buy things such as CBD oil and hemp capsules online. If you have been using hemp products for pain in the last few months – don’t suddenly switch back to opioids because it’s what you have in the medicine cabinet.

  • Join online support system.

If you are looking for a more human touch, you can consider joining online communities. While time will tell when it will be safe to meet in groups again, you can now try to use technology for support. You can easily find local support groups through social media. Remember, these people are here for help too.

  • Don’t be afraid to ask for help.

Asking for help can make some people uncomfortable – but it shouldn’t. It takes a lot of strength and power for someone to admit that they need help. There are many different ways someone can go about asking for assistance, whether through friends, support groups, or even medical practitioners. At Holistic Hope, we are here to help you with all of your treatment needs. We used an evidence-based approach to finding effective, alternative treatments to put a stop to the opioid crisis.
